—————-

Here is a piece that came from praying about the Agony in the Garden and the Annunciation, inspired by the shifting liturgical calendar of this year. The Annunciation is normally celebrated on March 25; however, this year, March 25th is within Holy Week. So the Annunciation is moved to the first Monday after the octave of Easter (April 8th), and one of the days we celebrate during the last week of March is Holy Thursday. After realizing that, I kept being drawn in thanksgiving to Jesus’ prayer for God’s will during the Agony in the Garden, “He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will,” (Matthew 36:39), and how beautifully his yes to God reminded me of Mary’s fiat, “And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” (Luke 1:38). I wanted to paint a piece focusing on these so I chose the yellow and red specked St. John’s wort (religious name: Christ’s Bloody Sweat) and Madonna lilies (Annunciation Lily). A tiny, “fiat voluntas tua,” Latin for, “Thy will be done,” appears in the center.
