This is a print of a compilation of five original watercolor paintings by Katrina Harrington accompanied by her calligraphy.
The Joyful Mysteries are as follows:
I) The Annunciation, The Annunciation Lily, Lilium candidum
One of the legends associated with the Annunciation/Madonna Lily is that the archangel Gabriel held a lily in his hand signifying the Virgin Mary's purity when he appeared to her at the Annunciation.
II) The Visitation, Mary's Shoes, Aquilegia, vulgaris
One of the legends associated with the Star of Bethlehem flower that symbolizes the Nativity is that after the star of the east directed the Magi to Jesus, the star burst and scattered little pieces over the fields that bloomed into flowers.
Mary's Shoes (columbines) are said to have sprouted up as Mary walked to see St. Elizabeth at the Visitation.
III) The Nativity, Star of Bethlehem, Ornithogalum umbellatum
One of the legends associated with the Star of Bethlehem flower that symbolizes the Nativity is that after the star of the east directed the Magi to Jesus, the star burst and scattered little pieces over the fields that bloomed into flowers.
IV) The Presentation of the Lord, Candlemas Bells, Galanthus nivallis
Snowdrops are traditionally called Candlemas Bells and are said to have bloomed on February 2 when the Presentation occurred (the Feast of the Presentation is also known as Candlemas).
V) The Finding in the Temple, Obedient Plant, Psychotegia virginiana
The Obedient Plant doesn't have a legend to go along with it, but scholars use it as a symbol of the fifth Joyful Mystery because the blossoms interestingly stay in the direction you adjust them toward, a trait which can represent Christ's obedience when he returned to his earthly family at the Finding in the Temple.
