This is a print of a compilation of five original watercolor paintings by Katrina Harrington accompanied by her calligraphy.
The Glorious Mysteries are as follows:
I) The Resurrection, Resurrection Lily, Lilium longiflora
I'm sure you notice all of the lilies at Easter time! They are called Resurrection or Easter Lilies.
II) The Ascension, Ladder to Heaven, Gladiolus
Gladiolus is one of my favorite flowers I was tickled to learn the old name for them is Ladder to Heaven. Perfect for the Ascension!
III) The Descent of the Holy Spirit, Pentecostal Holy Spirit, Aquilegia canadensis
Columbines, again! This time it is the red columbine with its stunningly blended red, orange and yellow petals that symbolizes the tongues of fire of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Columbines, again! IV) The Assumption, Assumption Lily, Hosta plantaginia
These hostas are everywhere around here (do you have a hosta plant in your yard?), and I never knew that their traditional name is Marian; these are Assumption lilies as they normally bloom around the Feast of the Assumption. Their white color matches Mary's pure soul.
V) The Coronation of Mary, Mary's Gold, Calendula officinalis
And finally, marigolds (Mary's Gold) for the Coronation of Our Lady. This particular genus (Calendula) was supposedly named Mary's Gold by St. Hildegard of Bingen in the twelfth century. The marigolds we normally think of today are also named Mary's Gold after the Blessed Mother, and they were deemed that by missionaries in Mexico centuries later.
