"But when the Blessed Sacrament is there, then this presence is no longer imaginary, but most real; and the sacred species are simply a veil from behind which the present Savior beholds and considers us, although we cannot see him as he is," St. Francis de Sales from Introduction to the Devout Life, Part II, Chapter II.

When I read this sentence from St. Francis de Sales, I was struck by the image of the veil and my understanding of the Real Presence grew (although I know I cannot truly understand the beautiful mystery of the Eucharist until heaven!). The idea of this piece of art has been dancing around in my head ever since. I wanted to create a lace veil out of sprigs of wheat.

Each sprig of wheat in the piece has either six kernels, nineteen kernels, twenty-two kernels, or twenty-six kernels for different passages in the Gospels about the Eucharist.

John 6 for the multiplication of the loaves and the Bread of Life discourse.

Luke 22:19 "And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.'"

Mark 14:22 "And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, 'Take; this is my body.'"

Matthew 26:26 "Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.'"

The pattern of the lace is from an old pattern of St. Zélie Martin who was a lacemaker and had such a deep devotion to the Eucharist.
