This is the original 5x7in painting "Shepherd's Crook, Flower of Mary," done in watercolor by Katrina Rose Harrington in May of 2024 when she did a flower study as she read through Fr. L. Gemminger's book, "Flowers of Mary," and painted one flower a day.
Excerpts from “Flowers of Mary.” by Fr. L. Gemminger, 1858.
* Not 100% sure that flower photo I found is the flower Fr. Gemminger is talking about when he mentions the sweet flag, but this is a flower called Shepherd’s Crook.
- “The Sweet Flag is a beautiful flower well-fitted for decorating churches; it is also known as the Indian Water Rose, and sometimes it is called the Shepherd’s Crook or Pastoral Staff. It consists of a long stalk with large leaves, gracefully at the top with a snow-white calix exhaling the most agreeable fragrance. The Sweet Flag is the emblem of Christian education. Parents, you are the shepherds, and your children are the little flocks committed to your care.
“Parents, ne’er forget your duty,
Lead your children virtue’s way;
That their souls adorned with beauty,
Heavenward tend from day to day.
See their young hearts like a garden,
Where the weeds will freely start;
You be watchful, ne’er permit them
To take root within the heart.
God above is ever watching,
And your efforts will reward;
So take courage, do your duty
Even though the task be hard.
