The religious name for daylilies is the Saint Joseph Lily. Legend has it that when it came time for the Virgin Mary to be betrothed, a sign was sent from God to show which unwed man from the House of David would be the one designated by God to marry her. St. Joseph's staff bloomed. For this reason and from the passage from Hosea 14:5, "The just man shall blossom like the lily," you often see St. Joseph with lilies. If you pray the Liturgy of the Hours, listen for that Bible passage in the responsory in evening prayer on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph.
